“The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.” – Deuteronomy 29:29 NLT
So often, we make a big deal out what what we do not know and use that as an excuse for not following God. We love to get caught up in the mystery of God so much that it distracts us from answering the calling of God. The danger here is that we risk not following God until we can figure out God. We adopt an attitude that says, “How can I follow a God that…”
How can I follow a God that commanded His people to war?
How can I follow a God that punishes people so harshly?
How can I follow a God that lays down such extreme sexual limitations?
How can I follow a God that commands me to forgive awful people?
How can I follow a God that…fill in your preferred issue here.
But the reality is this: All any of us can do is follow God to the degree in which He has revealed Himself. He does not owe us any explanation. He does not need to justify Himself to us. He is not, nor ever will be, accountable to us.
The good news is that God has revealed Himself through Jesus, who died on the cross and offers forgiveness and restoration for all. The good news is that God has revealed Himself as one whose love overwhelms His anger. The good news is that God has revealed Himself as one who accepts us right where we are, but loves us too much to leave us there.
