“How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace…They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you.” – Luke 19:42-44 NLT
Such is Jesus’ lament as He approached Jerusalem for the very last time. Jesus came riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. In His day, conquering kings approached cities on horses, dressed for battle. Peace delegations entered on donkeys. But Jerusalem would not (could not?) understand the way of peace.
Less than four decades after Jesus died on the cross, the zealots gained more and more influence in Israel, and incited rebellion. Jesus’ words were fulfilled when the Romans razed the Holy City to the ground and demolished the temple of God.
There is a way of peace that God has set out before us. The way of peace does not begin with desire or discipline or a display of strength. It begins by recognizing it when God has visited you.
When you are in conflict–with yourself, with others–start looking for God. He is present and active. Chances are, you have just not recognized Him.
