When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!” – Luke 7:9 NLT
Common sense would tell us that it is impossible to amaze God. After all, He knows all things from beginning to end. Nothing is hidden from Him, and even the future is an open book.
This does not stop us from trying to amaze God. Humanity has tried to amaze Him in a myriad number of ways: performing incredible feats of strength, creating unparalleled beauty through art, building impressive architectures. Yet God looks at all of such things and is unmoved.
What amazes God? Simple faith in Jesus.
The centurion in Luke’s account displayed a faith in Jesus that no one had yet confessed. His faith understood Jesus had an authority that extended beyond our realm, and yet had impact upon it. His faith did not put a box around Jesus by insisting upon His physical presence. His faith allowed Jesus to determine whether or not his slave would be healed.
Jesus, give me an amazing faith. Amen.
