But they didn’t understand any of this. The significance of his words was hidden from them, and they failed to grasp what he was talking about. – Luke 18:34 NLT
The apostles sat at the feet of Jesus and heard His voice. We have the Word of God and the press of the Holy Spirit. If there is anything we can be absolutely sure of, it is that God speaks to His people.
But God has things to say to you that you will not understand. He is greater than your imagination, therefore His plans are greater than your comprehension. So, there are things He tells you that do not make sense.
When Jesus spoke of His own death and resurrection, it confused His listeners because they had no context for it. After they saw the risen Christ, everything made sense, and it gave clarity to all the other things Jesus talked about as well.
When God tells you things you do not understand, it is not because He is trying to confound you, it is because He is about to do something incredible and He wants you to see it from the right perspective. But at the moment of the telling, you do not have the context to understand. Just wait: God’s work will give the context.
So, when you fail to grasp onto God’s words, do not pray for understanding. Instead, grasp ever more tightly to God Himself. Make your grip on Him so sure that when He does what only He can do, you do not miss it.
Then, you will understand.
