Don’t Wait for the Kingdom

Don’t Wait for the Kingdom

One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the Kingdom of God come?” Jesus replied, “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you. ” – Luke‬ ‭17:20-21‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It was more common for the Pharisees to ask Jesus, “When will God redeem Israel.” That’s because they viewed the redemption of Israel in terms of freedom from Roman rule. That is what makes it astounding that in this instance they asked about the coming of God’s Kingdom.

It is probable that they asked about the Kingdom because Jesus would not stop talking about it. The way Jesus talked about the Kingdom made people want to be part of it. Eventually, even the Pharisees wanted to know about it.

Jesus’ answer is somewhat elusive: “The Kingdom of God is among you.” How can that be? A kingdom is a place, isn’t it? Jesus is telling us that the Kingdom is where ever the King (Jesus) has dominion. Where ever Jesus is recognized as king, there is the Kingdom. The Pharisees did not have to wait for the Kingdom to come, because it (He) was already among them.

Neither do you.

If you have been waiting for the Kingdom to arrive, it is already among you. To experience the Kingdom, recognize the King. As soon as you surrender an area of your life to Jesus, that area becomes the Kingdom. When you surrender your household, your emotions, your attitudes, your finances, your forgiveness, that’s what makes the Kingdom come.

When you do that, you will gain what comes with the Kingdom: peace, joy, and righteousness (Romans 14:17).
